Last night, the highly anticipated Coco Chanel flick aired on Lifetime, starring Shirley MacLaine as the legendary designer in the latter part of her life and actress Barbora Bobulova played the younger Chanel, when she was still going by the name Gabrielle.
Since the fashion film will be on repeat over at the network for a couple of weeks, I want dissect the plot because, honestly, it's worth seeing. OK. Admittedly, Hurricane Ike took away the rest of my plans tis weekend, so it was a good fifth choice Saturday night activity.
Anyways, if you can control your ADD long enough to watch the three-hour-long movie you'll be able to find out how Coco created the LBD, the accessory she started off making to pay the bills, and reason why she named her first fragrance Chanel No. 5.
Warning: The accent MacLaine uses while playing Chanel is everything but French. This will undoubtedly ignore you. In fact, the majority of her scenes will. But thankfully, the film focuses on Coco's life in her 20s and 30s.
Just in case you wanted to wring your hands a little bit more about the idea of Project Runway hauling ass and cheesy catch phrases to Lifetime next season, listen up:
The date for which the sixth season was suppose to debut has been pushed back to January 2009.
Apparently, the decision to keep millions of fans from tuning in each until the new year has absolutely nothing to do with " logistical difficulties." Rigghhhhhht.
Hopefully, this means they're looking over their casting decisions because quite frankly this season's designers are a bunch of winers, which wouldn't be bad if they did funny things in the process.
"I have not. He wanted me to come to Paris for a fitting, but I am sorry. No. If he takes off his sunglasses and the gloves, maybe I'll go to Paris." -- Shirley MacLaine, who plays the role of Coco Chanel in a upcoming Lifetime movie, which airs this Saturday. From
LA Times.
Those still ailing from upset stomachs over the move of the beloved Project Runway from Bravo to Lifetime may want to stop reading this post now:
According to several reviews, the upcoming two-part Lifetime film, Coco Chanel, which focuses primarily on the latter part of the legendary designer's life, is oh so terrible, to say the least.
The New York Times, in particular, is overly irritated with the fact that the actresses chosen to star as Chanel, Shirley McLaine plays the mature Chanel while Barbara Bobulova is the younger version, look nothing alike -- saying there is "no resemblance to one another other than they both like a well-cut suit".
Ouch. But the newspaper's harsh words didn't stop me from watching Cashmere Mafia (R.I.P.), so I'm willing to waste an hour or so to see if the beautiful mess lives up to its reputation.
If you're down too, the first of the film airs on Lifetime on September 13th.
This is most certainly a bittersweet moment.
While the announcement that Weinstein and Co. is now looking for a new round of budding designers for the sixth season of Project Runway brings excitement with it, this also reaffirms the sad truth so many PJ fans refuse to face: Buh, bye Bravo and hello Lifetime.
The sixth season will usher in an new era of Project Runway as it receives a new network home, location, and producers -- leaving many to question if the show can still maintain its certain je ne sais quoi.
But that aside, anyone aching to be apart of this new Project Runway listen up:
Send in a personal video, virtual portfolio, and complete the application here. The deadline is July 9th. Oh, and you must be at least 21 years of age by September 15, 2008 to compete. Sorry, early 90s babies.
PS: If you have an asymmetrical haircut, your chances maybe have just exponentially increased (wink, wink).
