Although I'm no longer taking the aforementioned introductory biology course, I'm still on campus everyday because of my new job (more on that later). And as the weather continues to reach temperatures of over a 100 degrees everyday, I'm noticing more and more students toting umbrellas to shield themselves from the blistering Texas sun.
Here's my problem with the umbrella: it might shield you from the sun, but it doesn't help to keep you cool by any means. Especially, when the humidity is as high as 76% on any give day and the temp is nearing the 110s. (Editor's Note: It really, really sucks to be a Texan right now. Although, it did get pretty bad when our governor declared the state should succeed from the rest of the union a couple of months ago.) And when you're walking long distances, it becomes more of a nuciance than anything else -- only making the load you're currently packing that much heavier when those arms start to give in.
Plus, who wants to walk around with an umbrella all day?
On the other hand, not protecting your bare skin will most likely result in sunburns that will keep you indoors for the rest of summer. So, what to do? Wear a floppy hat? A visor? Slab on copious amounts of sunscreen and call it a day? Let me know what you think in the comment section!

Yesterday, I nearly had a heat stroke.
After exiting my hour and a half calculus class (and that's everyday, people), I was immediately halted in my tracks when I saw one of my fellow classmates wearing black sweat pants, a red American Apparel hoodie, and toting what appeared to be a child's umbrella.
Keep in mind, it was approximately 97 degrees that day. This is before we calculate the humidity index. "Can summer school really cause one to snap?," I thought to myself. Just looking at this woman made me want to pass out from heat exhaustion. And yet, she looked as if she didn't have a care in the world.
I think it was the umbrella that really got me. Why not just wear sunglasses? Or a hat? Sure. Summer brings with it periods of rain, but there was no over cloud that day.
What do you think? Have you ever walked around in the summer with a umbrella? Silly or practical? Discuss.

Today, WWD reports that Rihanna will be in New York on February 5th to shelter all of those making it rain in '08.
Actually, the Grammy nominated singer will be there to unveil her second collection of umbrellas with Totes. She will also be having a little bash with the accessories company's execs to celebrate the launch.
Rihanna's umbrellas will "range from $20 for a slender piece in a single color to $50 for a two-toned canopy style" and will be sold exclusively at Macy's this spring.
No word if RiRi will be sitting front row at New York fashion week next month, but we're sure the designers would love for her to sit underneath their tents (ella, ella).
