Sure, Shepard Fairey doesn't allow birds to defecate on blank canvases. And no, he doesn't spreads his seamen on old newspaper clippings. But he's the most important and well-respected artist right now, nonetheless.
After creating what is being coined the image of the election, Fairey's mixed media collage poster of Barack Obama will now forever be housed in the Smithsonian for all to see. As the HuffingtonPost reports, "Art collectors Heather and Tony Podesta of Washington donated money for the Smithsonian to purchase the work."
Those wanting to take home their own Fairey poster listen-up:
Obama's Presidential Inaugural Committee unveiled another print last Wednesday created by Fairey, which is to be sold on the committee's Web site. Most will sell for $100, but 1,000 prints signed by the artist are priced at $500. Proceeds will help fund official inaugural events.
Meanwhile, Fairey has created t-shirts that have the same post image plastered on the front of them. They can be purchased here. Just eight more days...
